The artist behind the work
I’m Jeff Malone, a Melbourne-based artist exploring the stories we find in nature, community and the places around us. My work is grounded in observation and connection — from the character held within an old tree, to Australian wildlife and the people who watch over our coastline.
Sharing the journey with me is Albus, my studio companion and officially appointed Chief Morale Officer. And while she’s not in the photo, my beautiful wife, Reg, is very much part of the story — supporting me in all things great and small and encouraging me to pursue this creative life.
Finding my way through art
My path to art hasn’t followed a straight line. I’ve spent much of my life working across different countries, industries and communities, while creativity has remained a constant thread — a way of observing, making and understanding the world around me.
In recent years, that creative practice has taken on a much greater place in my life. Drawing and painting have encouraged me to slow down, look more closely and notice the stories held in ordinary things: the scars and new growth of an old tree, the character and humour of an animal, or the quiet commitment of volunteers watching over a beach.
These observations have developed into distinct bodies of work. Held in the Sway explores trees not simply as subjects, but as witnesses to time, change and resilience. Natural Engagements reflects my fascination with the character and presence of animals, while Guardians of the Coastline draws on my own connection with Surf Lifesaving and the people who give their time to protect their communities.
While the subjects differ, I’m increasingly interested in what connects them — resilience, belonging, character, community and our relationship with the natural world. I want the work to be visually engaging and accessible, but also to offer something more for those who choose to look a little longer.
My practice continues to evolve, and I’m enjoying allowing it to take me somewhere I may not have expected.
